Hey Nineteen Steely Dan Tribute – An Amazing 11 Piece Band

Michael John Linnard – November 2, 2014

Last night Tamara and I went to the Garde Arts Center, New London, last night and saw “Hey Nineteen” – a Steely Dan tribute band. They were excellent. The very best live versions of the the recorded music of Steely Dan you will hear anywhere, and I suspect as good or better than Steely Dan themselves.

Every aspect of the originals was played to perfection on stage. For me the most impressive aspect was the guitar lead breaks, which feature so much in almost every song. And are iconic pieces of improvised music recorded in the last 45 years. Steely Dan were famous for going through guitarists until they got the perfect lead break on their records… they used the best session musics. Therefore to be able to play every lead break means that you have to full absorb and play with total conviction a dozen different styles. And even the simplest is almost impossible to play. When you think that the average pop tune has 3 – 6 chords… “Deacon Blue” has 38 different chords.

The band played with great energy and love of the music. Their vocals were great and the whole show was worth every penny. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tamara remembers singing the songs when she was a young girl in High School.

Rejoice Steely Dan Fans – It’s Hey Nineteen

Rejoice, Steely Dan fans! The next best thing to seeing the real band live is a local group of ten exceptional musicians, “Hey, Nineteen,” who play the music, note perfect. Just getting the right chords to these songs is like making a politician tell the truth.

I’m a drummer who goes to clubs and fades into the walls waiting for the music to end, but I was stunned by this band, and overjoyed. Superb renditions of “Reeling in the Years,” “Rikki Don’t Lose that Number,” “Black Friday,” “Gaucho,” “Green Earrings,” “Peg,” “Barrytown,” “Kid Charlemagne,” and many other Steely Dan classics, including, unbelievably, “Third World Man.” Never in my life did I expect to hear this mesmerizing tune in a club. Fantastic horns, great vocals, soaring guitars, terrific and attractive female singers—all blended together to complete a perfect mix. Add a great keyboardist, bad-ass bassist, and driving drummer, and you’ve got a musical libation that will shock your senses. Check out their Web Site and information below for photos and names of the band members, upcoming dates, and make your way to the Ocean Mist in Matunuk, RI on Friday, August 30, 2013 where they’ll be playing an evening gig. Just make sure “there’s gas in the car.”
